In today's economy, it's not uncommon for parents to need to relocate in order to secure a good-paying job. But what are your options when you share parenting time with a co-parent who may not be in favor of your move? Are you obligated to stay in the area?
Fortunately, courts will consider numerous factors when determining whether a custodial parent can relocate. These factors include:
- The age of the child
- The distance of the move
- The impact on the child's quality of life
At the same time, though, realize that it is a big decision. Just because you may be permitted to move doesn't mean that it's the best option, especially if your child's other parent is an active part of your child's life. While virtual visitation provides many options for families, it's never the same as in-person contact.
