Thriving Single Parent of the Week: S.V.D
This week's "Thriving Single Parent of the Week" is a mom who wrote in to share her tips for how to cope when your kids are away visiting the other parent for the summer. Here's what she had to say:
My kids go to see their father, who lives in another state, for three weeks every summer. For me, it always ends up being a very bittersweet time. I know I "should" look forward to the break and having some time for myself, but it's very hard for me to be apart from my kids. The way I've learned to cope with it is to give my kids my blessing. I put their need to be with their dad above my need to be around them. It doesn't make it hurt any less, but having a good attitude about it, and focusing on how important it is for them, does help. I also send them lots of cards and care packages while they're away!
In a very tangible way, B.V.D. is doing what many single moms and dads do every single day: she's putting her kids' needs in front of her own. You do this, too, I'm sure. And the more you do it, and acknowledge that you're doing it, the easier it becomes, because you see the impact your sacrifice has on your kids.
