Should Kids Trick-or-Treat on Halloween Alone?

What to Consider Before Letting Your Kids Trick-or-Treat Without an Adult

By , About.com Guide

Trick-or-treating tends to be an activity that kids look forward to all year long. And when they're young, it's common for mom or dad to go trick-or-treating with them. But how do you decide when it's safe for your kids to trick-or-treat on Halloween alone? Consider these factors before making your final decision.

The Safety of the Neighborhood Where the Kids Will Be Trick-or-Treating

Consider is whether the neighborhood where your children will be trick-or-treating alone on Halloween is really safe. Some of the things to look for are whether residents have their porch lights on, whether the parents of younger children are out and about trick-or-treating with their kids, whether the majority of homes in the area are occupied, and whether it's an area where you would be comfortable having your children walk alone on a typical evening. Certainly, if the answer is no, then you should resist the idea of allowing your kids to trick-or-treat in the neighborhood without adult supervision.

The Degree of Responsibility That Your Children Demonstrate

Before you say "yes" to letting your children go trick-or-treating without adult supervision, consider their own level of personal responsibility. Do they typically follow your rules, whether you are present or not? Are they consistent when it comes to practicing appropriate safety guidelines, such as looking both ways before crossing the street and not talking to strangers? Don't forget, too, that in mist of all the trick-or-treating excitement, your kids may be more likely than usual to be impulsive or act irresponsibly.

Your Children's Understanding of Safe Trick-or-Treating Rules

How well do your children understand the importance of never entering the home of someone they don't know, or not eating their candy until you've had a chance to inspect it? If these are rules that they will likely disregard, then it's important to hold off on letting your kids go trick-or-treating alone. In addition, make sure that you discuss the difference between neighbors you know well, and acquaintances you know only in passing.

Who Your Child Will Be Trick-or-Treating With

Even when kids are trick-or-treating alone on Halloween, they're not really alone. They're usually surrounded by friends and other trick-or-treating families. Consider who else will be there and the level of personal responsibility they typically demonstrate. For example, are these children generally responsible? Are they likely to steer your kids toward another neighborhood, where they don't have permission to go? And, if so, would your children be likely to follow them, or stand firm?

Whether Your Children Would Know What to Do in an Emergency

Finally, consider the things that could go wrong while trick-or-treating without adult supervision. Would your children know what to dob during an emergency? Take the time to role-play several scenarios with your kids, such as what to do if someone gets hurt, what to do if someone wants to go home alone, and what they should do if their friends resist following the rules you've set for trick-or-treating alone on Halloween.
