As a single parent, free time is rare. In part, this is because you're always taking care of your kids — to the point where it's hard to even take a shower without someone interrupting you! But it's also hard to enjoy free time because when you do have a moment to yourself, you feel compelled to use it to get something done.
On the surface, this strategy is a good one. It saves you time and helps you stay on top of all the things you need to do. But it can also put you on the fast-track to single parent burnout.
Create some balance by giving yourself permission to enjoy a moment alone now and then. It takes practice, and it may feel unnatural at first, but taking advantage of those rare pockets of "me time" can also leave you with more energy and stamina.
Here are some ideas to help you get started:
- When you have a moment alone, don't use the time to complete chores or do work!
- Read a good book. Choose something light that you can get completely lost in.
- Go out by yourself for a cappuccino or latte.
- Get together with a friend to talk, uninterrupted, about what's happening in your lives.
- Sit and do nothing. (This sound impossible, but it is so good for you to do occasionally!)
- Do something creative. Go to a local pottery studio or scrapbooking store and make something fun just for yourself.
- Take a long walk. Instead of just going around your neighborhood, try visiting a local park or trail.
- Breathe. Simply sit in your backyard and breathe in the sights and smells of the world around you.
