My oldest is a teenager now, but I'm still a little spooked by the thought of him trick-or-treating without an adult.
Fortunately, he and his friends usually wind up surrounded by plenty of familiar faces -- neighbors and fellow parents accompanying younger kids through the neighborhood.
How about you? Do you find the letting-go experience a little unnerving? If so, and particularly if it's the first time your kids will be trick-or-treating on their own, make sure you review your rules with them. For example:
- Stay in the neighborhood
- Stay with your group
- Skip any unlit homes
- Stay outside; never go in, even as a group
- Wait until you get home to eat your candy
