When clients tell me that they feel judged by others just because they're single, I encourage them to consider that sometimes people come off as judgmental when they're really distracted or self-absorbed. But every once in a while I read something that reminds me that it's still out there -- the ignorant let's-blame-all-of-soceity's-ills-on-single-parents mentality.
Today it was the comments on a recent blog post, Could the Federal Government Shutdown Affect Child Support Payments? Really? There are people who have nothing better to do than come on this site and slam hard-working single moms and dads who are sharing their stories about delayed child support payments -- and the bare necessities those payments would have covered?
Let's be clear. Most of the single moms and dads in this country never expected to raise their children alone. Those who are quick to pass judgment: try being part of the solution. Get to know the single moms and dads in your life, your neighborhood, and your workplace. They're some of the most inspiring and dedicated individuals you'll every meet!
Passing judgment does nothing constructive. But a kind word? Encouragement? You've no idea what a difference that would make!
Your Turn: If you think others need to hear this message, share it on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+. It's time to change negative attitudes toward single moms and dads!
