Thrifty Thursday: File Your Family Court Papers Pro Se

Reading about how the Michael Jackson and Jon and Kate Gosselin families plan to handle their respective custody arrangements has been interesting. But not every family has the means to hire an attorney to represent their case in family court.

In fact, just this week, a member of our Single Parents' Forum wrote in to ask how to file court papers pro se, which refers to filing the papers in court yourself, without legal representation. For those who are willing to invest the time and energy needed to research child custody laws, obtain the necessary documents, and do all of the prep work yourself, it's an option that can save you a significant amount of money. The other benefit is that even if you end up hiring a lawyer at some point, teaching yourself about the entire process will, in many ways, equip you to be your own best advocate.
