Thrifty Thursday: Vacationing in Lean Times
I know you're doing everything you can to save money right now, and I'd be the last person to advise you to splurge on something big this summer. But I really want to encourage you not to give up your vacation time this year. You've earned it. And even a "bare bones" get-away vacation will be memorable for your kids.
To get the most out of your money, consider:
- A "staycation," which would allow you to plan some day trips with your kids without paying costly hotel bills
- Going camping (preferably with lots of borrowed camping gear!)
- Staying with family this year, or
- Sharing accommodations with another single parent family

I agree! I know it’s a cliche, but those vacation memories are priceless. My children are adults, and we still enjoy rehashing our vacations from thirty years ago! Most of them were low-cost camping vacations, but they supplied tons of fun and memories.
We’re going to the beach for a week and plan to share the house with another family — my brother’s family. We also rented a smaller house than usual. I know it will be just fine - hey, it’s the beach!
