This week's "Thriving Single Parent" story comes from a reader named Charla, who wrote in to share her online dating advice:
My kids are the most important thing in my life! But let me tell you, it does get lonely sometimes as a single parent. So a few times I've gone onto various online dating sites just to meet new people. For the most part, it's been a good experience, but I've also been very cautious. So my online dating advice is simple: Don't take any chances, ever. I never give out my address or home phone number, and I only use the email address provided by the company. When I'm ready to meet someone, I meet them out at a safe location. I never let them come to the house! So far, I haven't even gotten to the point where I've dated anyone long enough to even consider giving them my real, actual contact information. And until that happens, I'm determined to keep my online dating life separate from my real life. With kids, you just can't take any chances.
I agree with Charla 100%. Online dating can be a fun way to meet new people and liven up your social life. And one of the best parts, specifically for single moms and dads, is the flexibility to get to know people online before actually going out on a "date." But it's also important to keep in mind that you're only getting to know as much of the person as they want you to see. Don't assume that you know more about them than you really do, just from exchanging a few emails.
