Economic Stimulus Package 2009: How Much Will Single Parents Receive?

Saturday February 21, 2009

I keep seeing references to "families" receiving $800 back through the latest economic stimulus package, and I've been wondering whether the government might (hopefully) include single parent families in their definition of the broader term "family."

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. I just took a look at the original text of the The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and according to section H. R. 1—196 (on page 196 of the document), $800 will go to couples filing jointly, and either $400, or 6.2% of your income (whichever is less), will go to individual taxpayers.

In addition, the original text doesn't even use the word "families." It's the media who is falsely equating "couples filing jointly" with "families."

Obviously, many couples filing jointly are families, but not all families are couples filing jointly!

Does it really matter how much anyone can expect to save from this wonderful stimulus (SPENDING) package? We are all paying for it up front. And whatever we are able to save will go to the states that are raising their taxes, fees and doing whatever they can to increase their revenues. In a state like California, doubling the vehicle registration fees & raising everything they can by lawmakers who can’t even pass a budget, all this does is shifts who gets our money. I wish I could opt out in exchange for government keeping their hands off what I work hard for. Unlike like our state and federal government, and these big businesses, I can live on a budget and am willing to take responsibility for my actions without making others pay for my mistakes. I don’t need a BAILOUT!!!

Dave, that’s wonderful that you don’t need a bailout…some people are not as fortune as you.
