Homelessness and Single Parent Families

Wednesday November 19, 2008

Every year, during the week before Thanksgiving, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor the "National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week."

Here are a few sobering statistics about homelessness and single parent families*:

  • Families with children made up nearly one quarter of all homeless individuals in 2007.

  • Statistically, homeless families are most often headed by single mothers in their 20s.

  • Approximately one half of all homeless children are under the age of 5.

If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact shelterlistings.org or govbenefits.gov.
