Homelessness and Single Parent Families
Every year, during the week before Thanksgiving, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor the "National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week."
Here are a few sobering statistics about homelessness and single parent families*:
- Families with children made up nearly one quarter of all homeless individuals in 2007.
- Statistically, homeless families are most often headed by single mothers in their 20s.
- Approximately one half of all homeless children are under the age of 5.
