Share Your Intimacy "Rules" With a Friend for Accountability

Saturday July 5, 2008
Do you have a set of "intimacy rules" to guide your decisions when it comes to dating? You know, guidelines for deciding issues like when to introduce your children, whether you allow your kids to see you holding hands or kissing, and whether you allow dates spend the night.

I think it's incredibly important to think through these issues before you find yourself in a intimate dating relationship, so that you can make clear decisions based on your personal convictions, rather than emotions.

In fact, I would go so far as to recommend that you share your "intimacy rules" with a trusted friend and ask him or her to hold you accountable to upholding your own standards. It makes a big difference to know that your friend is going to ask whether you are staying true to your own set of dating rules!

Thanks for this informative, practical post!

I found that it was much simpler to date when I had a wee little one. Although it was exhausting to date while raising my toddler solo, it was very easy to have clear boundaries. Now that my child is older and wiser — I am, too, I hope! — I’ve needed to make many rules for myself, as you suggested.

I really like your idea of having a good parenting buddy, someone who can help you stick to your plan. Thanks!
