Is the Great American Backyard Campout for You?

Thursday June 26, 2008
This Saturday is an event known as the Great American Backyard Campout. So what do you think? Would you consider camping on your own with your kids, either in your backyard or at a campground?

If you've never done it before, you might be thinking "No way!" I have to tell you, though, camping for a night or two makes a great - and inexpensive - mini-vacation. If you've never experienced sleeping in the great outdoors, consider trying it with a group of friends.

That's what I did with my two kids a couple of weeks ago, and I can honestly tell you that we had a great time. (Granted, I did have some help setting up the tent, but that was really just because there were other people standing around who were willing to pitch in, and I'm pretty confident that I could set it up on my own without any help at all the next time.)

So if you've never tried it, I really encourage you to consider camping as a vacation opinion this summer. It's cheap, fun, and - even with the work that's involved in packing and setting up - it really is relaxing to be outdoors together. If you don't have equipment, borrow a tent, or look for one on Freecycle, and give it a try.
